MY REVIEW

I was drawn to this book by the description, I loved the idea that a book could be hilarious and heart-warming at the same time. Then, as I read the first page, I quickly felt a sense of camaraderie with this modern-day superhero as I realised he enjoyed some of the same treats as me – Toffee Crisp, Cherry Coke and Spira (a discontinued Cadbury chocolate bar for those of you who don’t know). Oh how I’ve wished for Spira to make a comeback!

The hilarious part came quickly, Sam’s antics as a superhero were so much fun to read and regularly had me chuckling out loud. I loved the Good Samaritan thing but I couldn’t fathom why anyone would actually dress up and put themselves at risk like that. I feared for his safety on more than one occasion.

As I got to know Sam, his actions began to make sense. He was such a lovely character who found his way into my heart easily, I wanted the very best for him so I cheered him on (yes I was talking to the pages once again) at every opportunity! It was clear that something in his past had caused him a great deal of stress and he was trying to cope with that by controlling every element of his life. The ‘Event’, as it was known, intrigued me immensely and had me coming up with all kinds of theories.

My eyes were well and truly opened by the way the author described Sam’s loneliness and the effect it had on him. I particularly enjoyed the scenes where his ordered life was infiltrated by another person, I applauded every ‘out of his comfort zone’ moment!

This was a unique and heart-warming read that left a smile on my face.
